What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a type of hair restoration surgery during which healthy hair growing on the back and the side of the head, the so-called donor area, is transplanted to the areas of the scalp that suffer from hair loss.

Unlike the hair on top of the scalp, the donor hair growing on the back and side is immune to the damaging effects of dihydrotestosterone, an androgen that causes pattern baldness.

But a hair transplant operation is not only performed for patients whose hair is completely gone. This is why it‘s also referred to as hair restoration as it ican also be performed for patients with thinning hair or other types of hair loss, such as alopecia areata or circular hair loss.

What are the different hair transplant techniques available?

At Cosmedica Clinic, we use only the most modern, safe, and effective hair transplant techniques.

Outdated techniques like the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), also called „strip surgery“, where a strip of skin is taken from the donor area and harvested for hair follicles, are not being used at our award-winning clinic. This is for many reasons, one of them being that it leaves a visible linear scar at the back of the head.

Instead, we focus on the newer Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) techniques, specifically the improved FUE Sapphire and Micro Sapphire DHI methods. Please click the links to find more information about those.

Modern graft extraction

What is Follicular Unit Extraction?

FUE has gained popularity due to its minimally invasive nature. In a FUE hair transplant procedure, the surgeon will remove individual hair follicles from the donor area using a small punch tool.

This results in smaller, less noticeable scars and a quicker recovery time compared to FUT, where a strip of skin is excised and the follicles are harvested from the strip.

What is Direct Hair Implantation?

DHI is an advanced form of FUE, where the extracted hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and then implanted directly into the recipient area with the same specialized tool, eliminating the need to create recipient sites beforehand.

This precise and controlled method ensures higher survival rates for the transplanted hair, leading to more natural-looking results.

Who is eligible for a hair transplant?

The eligibility criteria for this procedure depend on various factors that need to be considered.

Firstly, individuals with male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) are the most suitable candidates for a hair transplant. This is the most common type of hair loss experienced by both men and women. Hair transplant surgery can effectively restore hair in these cases.

Secondly, individuals who have experienced hair loss due to trauma, such as burns or accidents, can also benefit from a hair transplant. The procedure can help reconstruct the scalp and restore hair growth in these specific areas.

Additionally, individuals with medical conditions, such as alopecia areata or traction alopecia, may also be eligible for a hair transplant. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified hair transplant surgeon to determine the best course of action based on the specific condition and individual circumstances.

It is important to note that age is also a crucial factor when considering hair transplant eligibility. Ideally, candidates should be in good health and have a stable hair loss pattern.

While there is no single best age for a hair transplant, individuals above the age of 25 tend to be better candidates as their hair loss pattern is more predictable.

What does the procedure promise?

First of all, the main purpose of any type of hair transplant surgery is to recover lost hair and have a better appearance thanks to a fuller head of hair. These aesthetic expectations are great motivation for our patients.

Although hair transplantation is a surgical procedure, new techniques help to prevent pain. The methods used for hair transplants are also developing rapidly.

In recent years, the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique used in hair transplantation has become widespread. Hair transplantation clinics rapidly adopted it because it is easy to carry out and is mostly painless. FUE hair transplants not only reduce pain and other side effects but also feature excellent results because individual hairs are being transplanted.

There is no stitching required with this technique. This is an important factor in the prevention of pain. Even though this is rare, in some cases a slight amount of pain is felt when the effect of anaesthesia wears off. However, this is easily remedied with the help of painkillers prescribed by your expert doctor.

Thanks to the accelerated healing process, you can return to work within a few weeks. It can take up to 12 months for total hair regrowth and a full head of hair.

What to expect after the procedure

After the hair transplant procedure, it is important to have a clear understanding of what to expect during the recovery process.

Immediately following the procedure, the scalp may be tender, and there may be some swelling and redness in the treated area. These side effects are generally mild and should subside within a few days. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter options to help manage any discomfort.

It is also important to follow the post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon, which may include avoiding strenuous activities and wearing loose-fitting hats or other head coverings to protect the treatment area.

During the first few weeks, you may experience some shedding of the transplanted hair. This is a natural part of the process and is known as “shock loss.” However, within a few months, you should start to see new hair growth in the treated areas.

It is vital to have realistic expectations and understand that the final results may take several months to fully develop. With proper care and follow-up appointments, you can help ensure the success of your hair transplant procedure.
