Why do men go bald?
Most bald men lose their hair to androgenetic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness. It’s inherited, and it’s very common: the US National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus estimates it affects around 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States, and more than half of men over 50 have some degree of hair loss.
Male pattern baldness happens when hair follicles on the top and front of the scalp become sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone made from testosterone. Over time, those follicles shrink and produce thinner, shorter hairs, until some stop growing hair at all. Hair at the back and sides of the head is usually resistant to DHT, which is why so many balding men keep a horseshoe-shaped fringe.
Doctors often describe the stages of male hair loss with the Norwood scale, which runs from 1 (no visible loss) to 7 (only a band of hair left at the back and sides).
Other causes of baldness include:
- Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, around 2% of people develop it at some point in their lives. In rarer forms, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis, all scalp or body hair is lost.
