In this article, we analyze the clinical details, the strategy adopted by Dr. Acar, and what makes this procedure a true success story.

    Who Is Hakan Çalhanoğlu?

Hakan Çalhanoğlu playing for Inter Milan

Born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1994, Hakan Çalhanoğlu is much more than just a midfielder: he is the playmaker and captain of both Inter Milan and the Turkish national team, universally recognized as one of the best in the world at his position.

After significant development in Germany (Karlsruhe, Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen) and four seasons with AC Milan, he moved to Inter in 2021, becoming a tactical and mental cornerstone of the team. With the Nerazzurri, he has built an enviable track record, winning two Scudetti (Serie A titles), three Coppa Italia trophies, three Supercoppa titles, and reaching two historic Champions League finals, achievements that earned him the award for Best Midfielder in Serie A and a Ballon d’Or nomination.

Off the pitch, Çalhanoğlu is a dedicated family man with an eye for detail, a mindset reflected in the meticulous care he takes of his personal image, which is now more than ever in the spotlight of media and fans.

    Çalhanoğlu’s Characteristics

Although he started out as an attacking midfielder (trequartista), Çalhanoğlu is an exceptionally versatile player capable of covering every role across the midfield:

    • Deep-Lying Playmaker (Mediano): This is where he reached full maturity, especially during his time at Inter, where he has been instrumental in the deep-lying playmaker role.
    • Other Roles: He can play as a central/box-to-box midfielder (mezzala), winger (in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1), and occasionally as a second striker behind the center forward.

    Key Skills and Attributes

    • Intelligence and Vision: Described as “mentally fast” with exceptional game vision, able to read situations and set up plays for his teammates.
    • In Possession: Boasts excellent dribbling skills and stands out as a talented playmaker and finisher.
    • Defensive Phase: In addition to attacking, he has shown solid defensive capabilities, contributing to pressing and ball recovery.
    • Attacking Specialty: His trademark is a powerful, precise shot, making him an absolute set-piece specialist. This skill earned him the German nickname FreistoßGott (“Free-Kick God”).
    • Statistics: From 2013 to 2021, across Europe’s top five leagues, he was the second-highest scorer from direct free kicks, behind only Lionel Messi (30 goals vs. his 14).
    • Penalties: He is also considered an elite penalty taker, as demonstrated by his streak of 17 consecutive converted penalties (ended in 2024) and his status as the highest-scoring Turkish player in Serie A history.

In short, Çalhanoğlu is a complete midfielder who combines tactical intelligence, versatility, and lethal ability from long range or dead-ball situations.

Born in Mannheim, Çalhanoğlu began at Waldhof Mannheim’s youth academy before joining Karlsruher SC’s youth system at age 15. He made his 2. Bundesliga debut in 2011, catching the attention of Hamburger SV, who signed him in the summer of 2012.

    Hamburger SV (2013–2014)

He made his Bundesliga debut on August 11, 2013, immediately showing his promise by scoring a brace against Eintracht Frankfurt. He finished the season with 11 goals in 32 matches, helping the team avoid relegation.

He joined on a free transfer in July 2017. Initially a rotation player, he became an undisputed starter under Gennaro Gattuso and, especially under Stefano Pioli, establishing himself as the primary attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Why the Micro Sapphire DHI Technique Is the Ideal Choice for an Athlete

For a professional soccer player, recovery time and natural-looking results are top priorities. Dr. Acar opted for the Micro Sapphire technique DHI, the gold standard for patients seeking high density and a rapid return to daily activities.

Unlike traditional techniques, Micro Sapphire DHI utilizes a micro-sapphire blade. After opening the micro-channels, the hair follicles are implanted using a specialized DHI implanter pen.

    • Maximum precision in the angle, direction, and depth of each individual graft ensures completely natural results. The micro-sapphire blade allows for much finer, cleaner incisions.
    • Because the incisions are smaller, they heal faster, cause less discomfort, and carry a lower risk of infection.
    • The DHI Sapphire implanter pen provides complete protection to hair grafts during implantation.

    The Stages of the Technique:

    1. Follicular Unit Extraction: Similar to traditional FUE hair transplants, hair follicles are gently harvested from the donor area one by one using advanced micromotors. Different punch types are selected based on hair type (Caucasian, Asian, Afro-textured). The harvested follicles are then carefully extracted using specialized forceps.
    2. Sapphire Micro-Incisions: The micro-sapphire blade opens the hair channels. The incisions are far more accurate and precise than those made with traditional steel tools. This minimizes tissue damage and trauma, leading to faster healing.
    3. DHI Implantation System: Grafts are implanted directly into the channels. The advanced DHI implantation system provides maximum graft protection throughout the process.

Dr. Acar’s Strategy: Maximizing Aesthetic Impact

Dr. Levent Acar and Hakan Calhanoglu

A hair transplant is not just about numbers; it is about strategic design. With 4,500 grafts available, Dr. Acar designed a customized treatment plan for Çalhanoğlu, focusing on two key areas:

    • The hairline: To frame the face and restore a youthful, sharp appearance that is immediately noticeable in public appearances.
    • A small section of the crown (vertex): To ensure continuity, thickness, and overall density throughout the scalp.

This targeted approach dramatically enhanced the most visible areas while sustainably and strategically preserving the donor area (the back of the head), ensuring long-lasting, durable results.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s Hair Transplant in His Own Words

Asked by Italian media about his new look, Hakan Çalhanoğlu confirmed that he had undergone a hair transplant:

“Yes, I got a hair transplant. My teammates, and even Modrić the other day in the derby, tease me about it. But I’m fine with it; I feel great.”

The Turkish midfielder did not shy away from locker room banter, showing that hair restoration has become a completely normal, open topic of conversation even in professional sports.

Despite the jokes, Çalhanoğlu emphasized that he feels much better with his new look, expressing his satisfaction with the decision and his confidence in Dr. Acar and Cosmedica Clinic’s work.

The Recovery Timeline: What to Expect

The procedure was performed on July 5, 2026. For all our patients, just like Hakan, understanding the post-op timeline makes the recovery smooth and stress-free:

    • First 2 Weeks: Healing of both the donor and recipient areas. Any mild redness or small scabs will quickly resolve with the specialized washing routine provided by Cosmedica Clinic.
    • Months 1–3 (Shock Loss Phase): Transplanted hairs may shed temporarily. This is completely normal and a positive sign that the hair follicles are alive and preparing for new growth.
    • Months 4–6: Visible regrowth begins. The new hair progressively becomes thicker and stronger.
    • Months 9–12: Final results settle in, revealing a full, dense, and completely natural head of hair.
